Multiple select and drag-and-drop questions
Since April 2023, the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) goes beyond plain multiple choice. Two formats catch the most students off guard:
Multiple select (SATA)
“Select all that apply” — judge every option on its own and pick each one that's correct. There's no set number of right answers, and NGN scoring gives partial credit: correct picks count for you, wrong picks count against you. Never leave one blank.
Practice free SATA questions →Drag-and-drop (ordered response)
Drag steps into the correct sequence — the order of a procedure, or which nursing action comes first. Classic ordered-response items are scored all-or-nothing (newer NGN drag-and-drop variants can give partial credit), so practice sequencing with ABCs and the nursing process until it's automatic.
See all 5 NGN question types →Both formats — plus cloze and matrix — come with every free NurseReady account, with AI rationales and the same partial-credit scoring as the real exam.

FAQ
Common questions about NCLEX practice tests
- Is this NCLEX practice test really free?
- Yes — and you don't need to create an account to start. Click "Start the test" below and answer the questions. We'll show you the rationale after each one.
- How is this different from the NurseReady exam simulator?
- This page is a quick, no-signup taste test — a few questions to see if NurseReady is for you. The NCLEX Exam Simulator is the full 75-question timed simulation with category breakdown and a readiness score, included with every account (free tier included).
- Are the questions like the real NCLEX?
- Yes. Every question is built around the NCLEX-RN / NCLEX-PN test plan and matches the format of the real exam — including all 5 NGN question types (MCQ, SATA, Ordered, Cloze, Matrix) once you go beyond the demo.
- How many practice questions does NurseReady have?
- 2,000+ AI-generated NCLEX practice questions across all 8 test plan categories, with full rationales and an AI coach you can ask follow-ups. Free tier gives you unlimited daily practice within session limits.
- How long should I study for the NCLEX?
- Most candidates do 4–6 weeks of focused prep with 75–125 practice questions per day in the final two weeks. NurseReady's readiness score tells you when your accuracy is in pass-likely territory.
- How many practice questions do I need before the NCLEX?
- Many NCLEX prep programs recommend working through 2,000–3,500 practice questions total, ramping up to 75–125 per day in the final two weeks. Volume matters less than review — read the rationale on every question you miss and you'll need fewer total questions to get exam-ready.
- Does the free test include multiple select (SATA) and drag-and-drop questions?
- The quick demo on this page uses multiple choice so you can start in seconds. A free NurseReady account adds all 5 NGN formats: standard multiple choice, multiple select (SATA) with partial credit, drag-and-drop ordered response, cloze, and matrix — the same formats the real exam has used since the Next Generation NCLEX launched in April 2023.
- Can I practice free NCLEX questions by category?
- Yes. NurseReady has a free practice page for each of the 8 NCLEX test plan categories — pharmacology, management of care, safety & infection control, physiological adaptation, basic care & comfort, reduction of risk potential, health promotion & maintenance, and psychosocial integrity. Use the category grid on this page to jump straight to the one you want to drill.
